TEHRAN/WASHINGTON – The conflict between the United States and Iran escalated sharply on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, as U.S. forces launched a series of strikes to prevent the mining of the Strait of Hormuz. While the Pentagon reported the destruction of over a dozen Iranian naval vessels, new airstrikes reportedly devastated a residential neighborhood in the Iranian capital.
Naval Confrontation at the “Global Chokepoint”
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it carried out precision strikes against Iranian assets near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. According to a statement released on X, U.S. forces eliminated 16 Iranian minelayers and multiple other naval vessels.
The operation followed intelligence reports—first disclosed by sources to CNN—indicating that Tehran had begun deploying a “small number” of naval mines in the waterway. Though the mining was described as not yet extensive, the strategic threat to the passage, which carries approximately 20% of the world’s oil, prompted an immediate military response.

”We will not allow terrorists to hold the Strait of Hormuz hostage,” said U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
In a characteristic discrepancy, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that 10 “inactive” boats had been destroyed. He issued a stern ultimatum to Tehran, demanding the immediate removal of any mines already placed:
- The Ultimatum: Failure to clear the waterway would lead to military consequences “at a level never seen before.”
- The Comparison: Trump suggested the U.S. would employ the same aggressive missile tactics used in recent counter-cartel operations in the Caribbean to “permanently eliminate” any boat attempting to mine the strait.
Tehran Residential Areas Struck
As the naval battle unfolded, the Iranian Red Crescent Society reported a grim situation in the capital. Fresh airstrikes hit District Four in eastern Tehran and parts of the neighboring city of Karaj.
- Civilian Toll: Rescuers stated that several five-story residential buildings were leveled. While official casualty counts are fluctuating, the Red Crescent previously noted that over 3,000 residential homes and 14 medical centers have been damaged since the start of Operation Epic Fury on February 28.
- Environmental Hazard: Thick, toxic smoke from hit oil depots continues to blanket the city. Officials warned that recent rainfall in the area could be highly acidic, posing a severe risk of chemical burns and respiratory damage to residents trapped in the rubble.
State of the War: Day 11

The U.S.-Israeli campaign, now in its eleventh day, continues to focus on three primary objectives: the destruction of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, the elimination of its naval capabilities, and the dismantling of its missile stockpiles.
Despite the intensity of the strikes, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) remains defiant, though U.S. officials claim Iran’s missile launch capacity has been degraded by 90%. However, the human cost continues to mount; estimates suggest over 1,300 Iranians have been killed since the outbreak of hostilities, with the conflict now threatening to plunge global energy markets into a prolonged crisis.
